it depends how powerful your blender is and how sharp/strong the blades are. many blenders are built to be able to withstand crushing up ice, though using it for this a lot will wear down the blades on any blender. unless it’s a very old or weak blender it shouldn’t really damage it to do it this one time.
It won’t break your blender, but you’ll want to add some water because the ice will stick to the edges and won’t fall onto the blade; so only if it’s a little water (1 or 2 table spoons) you will want some liquid. – only so your ice crushes not because your blender will break.
Usually the ice won’t be able to crush up as well if there isn’t water or liquid in the blender.
The blender will probably not break; however, there is a chance it could burn out.
"If your smoothie gets too thick, then the blender cannot mix/blend, the motor works too hard and can burn out. You will start to smell a funny electric burning smell." http://www.ellies-whole-grains.com/blender-burning-smell.html
I find that when I make a smoothie, if the smoothie gets to thick and the blender starts to smell with a weird electrical burning smell, then I turn the blender off and give it a rest!
Sometimes that is just the blender reminding us, and sometimes it is the blender getting old and too much wear and tear.
It’s not a super big deal, just something to be aware of and take care of your blender so you can have lots of YUMMY smoothies !!!

If you forget the water it will make a slushy instead of a smoothie….Ice wont break a blender silly, unless you bought a crappy blender.

It depends on how frozen the ice is
but you are basically blending slushy water/ ice

You could probably put a brick in a good blender and not break it. It’s fine.

I think you should try the brick idea. ahaha.
